Which boat engine to choose

To choose the right motor, you need to answer a few questions:

  • How big is your boat. Diesel engines are quite heavy. Their use on boats less than 10 meters is undesirable;
  • How often do you use your boat. Count the figure not in days, but in hours;
  • How high speeds do you plan to develop.

Without a doubt, owners of small boats should give their preference to gasoline engines. Whereas a diesel engine will make your boat heavier. However, if you have a larger boat, a diesel engine will give you more options. But, on the other hand, it will produce more noise.

Try to come up with a rough estimate of how much time you plan to spend on the boat during the season. Is it a small hobby that you can devote a couple of hours a week to? Or are you going to overcome river obstacles on a boat and go out to sea? If the resulting figure is less than 100 hours per year, gasoline may be the best option.

Also, be sure to consider the number of nearby gas stations or other ways to get gasoline. For example, there are no gas stations on the River Thames in England. This means that consumers of gasoline will have to find a way to transport it, such as a huge canister, funnel and hose.

Traveling by boat can be relaxing and peaceful. But you experience real adrenaline only when you cut through the waves at high speeds, and the wind whistles in your ears. Although gasoline engines may use less fuel at low rpm, this is not the case when you need to go faster. A gasoline engine will consume more fuel because it works much harder. A diesel engine uses less fuel to cover the same distance.
