About Catamaran
A catamaran is a ship that has two decks connected by a bridge into a single structure. Although sometimes the deck may be absent – it is replaced by a metal net (as a rule, this is typical for sports catamarans). The name of the boat refers to one of the dialects of the population of southern India – the word “kattumaram” was used to refer to two logs connected to each other.
Catamaran yachts are also actively spreading – high-speed vessels capable of accelerating up to 250 km / h. They have both a sail and a motor, they are serial and made to order. The materials are aluminum, steel and multicomponent compositions. It was these catamarans that led to the emergence of the powerboat Formula 1, a new sports discipline.
Differences between a catamaran and a yacht
A catamaran is often referred to as a yacht, since a yacht is usually referred to as all watercraft used for recreation on the water. However, these are completely different ships with significant differences:
Firstly, large catamarans are 2 times more spacious than yachts, since different rooms can be equipped in both of their floats.
Secondly, catamarans are more stable than yachts in rough water, which is achieved by a larger area. Therefore, it is suitable for travel even for those who suffer from seasickness.
Thirdly, catamarans are safer in shallow water because their keel does not go as deep into the water as compared to a yacht. And this gives the ship greater cross-country ability and opens up new opportunities for walking where it is impossible to sail on a yacht.
Types of catamarans
Differences in the designs of certain catamarans are primarily due to their purpose and method of movement. Therefore, there are three types of boats:
